Have you ever set a goal to lose weight by a certain date? First, you figure out how much weight you want to lose, and then you set a deadline to lose that weight. You set a goal with a deadline.
Then you start losing weight faster than a lottery winner loses money. You hit your target weight by your target deadline! You did it! Then what happens? Most people put the weight right back on.
Do you take the same approach with your website? The typical cycle goes like this:
- Set a goal with a deadline. Like building a great website.
- Accomplish your goal. Like getting on the first page of Google.
- Then stop. And eventually, lose your 1st-page ranking.
Website Failing You? Why the “Goal Approach” Doesn’t Work
That’s the typical cycle with the “goal approach”. It doesn’t work. It only gives you stress and uncertainty. The goal approach forces you to ask the wrong questions about your website and online marketing efforts.
What do you discuss in your marketing meetings? Do you set goals for acquiring leads from your website and online marketing? When you first built your website, did you set traffic and lead generation goals?
Your website is failing you because the “goal approach” doesn’t work with websites or online marketing. Why? Because just like losing weight, your website is never “done”. Your website is like a garden. You have to continuously take care of it or it will wither and die.
There’s a better way and it’s called the “Systems Approach”.
How the “Systems Approach” Works
The systems approach is more a way of thinking, but the two main ideas are to:
- Always be testing (Habit #3 of highly successful marketers)
- Fail forward and keep learning
Wouldn’t you agree that a system of life-long learning about healthy living would be a better approach than setting a nebulous goal to lose weight? Maybe a certain diet isn’t for you, but this system of continuous learning allows you to ‘fail forward’. A system enables you to figure out how you’re actually going to make it happen.
When it comes to your website and online marketing, you can use the systems approach to turn your website into a lead generating machine. Sometimes it’s a struggle, but the systems approach empowers you to figure out how to get continuous results.
Maybe you already have a great website and you’re getting a ton of traffic. But for some reason, leads are slipping through the cracks. Maybe you used to get traffic and leads. But you didn’t know the “your website is like a garden” metaphor wasn’t just a figure of speech and that past success dried up. Or maybe you just launched your website.
No matter what situation you’re in, the systems approach is the only way you can really figure out how you’re going to get the continuous results you deserve. It will empower you to fail forward by testing, learning and improving.
The first step to moving forward is to take a step back. Find out where you are now. Ask yourself:
- How is your website performing now? What’s working and what’s not?
- Is your website getting enough traffic? Is it converting that traffic into qualified leads?
The second step is to eliminate any uncertainty and stress by getting a website analysis. You’ll discover what’s working, what isn’t, and what you can do better to boost lead generation and increase revenue.
To your continued success,
